Calving has begun!

Sorry for my absence..we have had a few unexpected family happenings. But we have begun calving, which keeps us incredibly busy. I won’t blog much today, but will share some pictures of just today. Cleaning out barns, bringing in pairs, tagging calves, and bottle babies. Today was beautiful out, but the next few days will be very cold and snowy. 20150224_101634

What 92 years looks like..

Wanted to share today of what 92 years old looks like when you keep yourself active and love to farm and ranch. This is my husbands grandpa..he just turned 92 years old yesterday. He loves to tinker around, still welds, at the age of 90 built a 12 stall addition onto our calving barn, and at the age of 91 had a knee replacement. I love to talk to him, as he is a veteran, has tons of knowledge about so many things, and loves to support his family. He has seen the depression, changes in agriculture, and medicine.

We had a busy day today as we shipped out our calves on 4 different semi’s, sorted off some heifers to keep back for next year, and helped the neighbor move some of his cows. Selling our calves at the sale barn tomorrow and hoping for good prices!

Moving cows and working on the benefit

We moved cows this morning, which was pretty simply, because we just moved them across the road. I had to go to work quick this morning, so I could get timecards done, since I was home sick yesterday. I haven’t felt the best the last couple days, stomach flu yesterday and went to the doc today, sinus infection and bronchitis. So picked up my meds and called the hubby to see if he wanted a Caribou coffee, since I knew hot chocolate would of course make me feel better. So of course he said yes he wanted one. Grabbed those and headed home to move cows. Once we got done moving cows, we went to work on distributing flyers and getting donations for the benefit barrel race and silent auction we are putting on for a dear friend that has just been diagnosed with brain cancer. One thing i have learned, hug your loved ones very tight. You just never know.

10 Lessons for All of Us from the Plainsky, Nebraskans

Wise words from my brother 🙂

Photography of the American West

Long Morning, Lusker Ranch Long Morning, Lusker Ranch

I began the PlainSky, Nebraskans project three years ago. My daughter was two; I was finishing my master’s thesis; we had lived in our present home less than a year. But I felt called to the project, energized by it, focused by the prospect of documenting a way of life with which I was familiar, but knew others weren’t. And time was running out.

So here I sit, the project well in hand, the first show opening in nine months, and a companion limited-edition book. So what? That’s not why I did this; I was looking for lessons, not praise. I was searching for cultural memories and ways in which to preserve them, mainly through photographs. Still, what have I learned?

And then, Rachel Larson’s 25 Things list crossed my path. She codified everything I had seen from the honest, hardworking Nebraskans I have been photographing…

Farmers and ranchers don’t have days off..

Sundays around here are not lazy days. As we break ice on the all the tanks, seven total, and feed the calves, fats, and the cows on stalks, it is a whole morning process. It has been a very cold morning, but beautiful. Just needed coveralls and a sweatshirt to keep warm, was a balmy 1 degree when we went out. Now I am headed in to do a little cleaning before we go pay some pasture rent and head to town to do a little shopping today. Have a great day everyone!

Cold Snowy day and a Husker loss.

Well, from the suggestion of several, I have taken to some blogging. I am a ranch/farm/working/mom wife. I work as an Admin Assistant 3 days of the work week, then the other few days of the week I help at home. We farm with my husbands family, which has been in the family for over a hundred years. We run a fairly large farm and cow/calf operation. We love what we do and wouldn’t change it for the world! This blogging is new to me, so bear with me as I figure it out.
